The art of woodcarving in Val Gardena

In the 17th century, Val Gardena was still a valley largely cut off from the outside world, whose inhabitants made a living from agriculture. During the harsh, long winters, they passed the time by carving wood, which was sold at markets and fairs in the summer. From this extra income, woodcarving developed into an art form that quickly made Val Gardena famous.

The woodcarvers of Val Gardena proved to be extremely skilful and over the next few centuries produced mainly sacred wooden works of art, which can still be admired today in many churches and chapels around the world. The product range was later expanded to include nativity scenes and wooden toys.

Anyone wishing to become a carver today and work in Val Gardena must first complete a five-year training programme. Despite the ubiquitous use of machines, the art of woodcarving still requires exceptional dexterity, a high degree of creativity, expertise and a love of tradition.
