Course: Downhill in Val Gardena

The Saslong is a demanding downhill run, full of pitfalls and challenges. It starts with a 100-metre-long steep section that requires technical skill and courage. About halfway down the course are the legendary Camel Humps, three bumps that can only be mastered with difficult jumps. Many top athletes jump over the third hump with a leap of up to 70 metres. Next, the race continues in a demanding manner: the "Ciaslat-Wiese" presents a final challenge with numerous bumps and four curves, before descending the final slope to the finishing jump at breathtaking speed. History of the race

In 1969, the first FIS Ski World Cup race took place in Val Gardena. The technically demanding Saslong downhill was built especially for this event. The World Championships, which always brought new records, made the Saslong and Val Gardena world-famous. The villages of Val Gardena then developed into popular tourist hotspots, where winter sports enthusiasts from all over the world spent their holidays each year. In 1972, another World Cup race followed, and in 1975 a World Cup final with 40,000 spectators cheering on the South Tyrolean winner Gustav Thöni. Since this final, the downhill and, beginning in 2002, the Super G have been held on the Saslong. Due to the sometimes serious crashes, the ground conditions of the slope were changed. The Ski World Cup races in Val Gardena are still spectacular, in no small part because of the Camel Humps.
