The Val Gardena Railway

A Trip into the Past

A walk along the old railway path is a journey into the past. Cross the iron gate and immerse yourself into history. All the ingredients for an unforgettable adventure are given: a long tunnel, an impressive lighting, the sound of dripping water, calcification on the rocks and several finds of the old Val Gardena Railway (“Ferata de Gherdëina”).

Enter the tunnel! You will be fascinated by it!

The Val Gardena Railway („Ferata de Gherdëina“) was built in 1917 in a record time of only five months by 6.000 Russian prisoners to transport war material. The railway crossed the whole valley. After the Second World War the railway was used by the tourists to reach Val Gardena and by local people to transport wood carvings out of the valley.

On May, 29th 1960 the Val Gardena line was shut down. Currently the old railway line is a wonderful promenade with lots of historical pictures, several children’s playgrounds and many viewpoints.

The tunnel near the parish church of S. Cristina has been restored and opened to the public in 2017.

It reflects the history of the Val Gardena Railway with the help of panels and the old Ladin song “La Ferata”.
