First ascent by Paul Grohmann

There are many legends surrounding the first ascent of the Sassolungo. What is certain is that the Viennese alpinist Paul Grohmann must have already undertaken several exploratory tours before he succeeded in making the first ascent of the Sassolungo on 13 August 1869. Back then, Paul Grohmann started his route from Plan da Cunfin, continuing via Punta Dantersass, ice chute and the amphitheatre to the summit. Today the route starts from the Sassolungo Pass, follows the Fassaner ledge to the amphitheatre and bypasses the ice gully on the left by an alternative route over the rocky ridge. The rest roughly corresponds to the route found by Grohmann.
