The Purger Monument, which is located on the edge of the church square in Ortisei, was built in memory of Johann Baptist Purger (1805-1872). In the face of considerable resistance and difficulties, Mayor Purger had built the Val Gardena highway from Ponte Gardena to Ortisei, which opened in 1856.
The Luis Trenker Monument, which can be found on the promenade with the same name, was built in honour of one of the most famous sons of Val Gardena, the all-rounder - he was architect, mountaineer, actor, director and writer all in one - Luis Trenker.
At the foot of the climbing wall “Parëi de Ciampac” (Vallunga) there is a wooden monument in honour of the great mountain climber Emilio Comici, who had a deadly accident just on this wall in the year 1940.
Emilio Comici, who has achieved more than 200 first ascents in the Dolomites, among them the “Salami” in the Sassolungo group, was first citizen of Selva Gardena from 1938 to 1940, where he worked as director of the Ski School.
