Val Gardena Folklore Festival

Next Event: August 2024

Each year on the first Sunday in August, a special event takes place: the Val Gardena Folklore Festival. On this day, the locals dress up in the valley’s traditional garment. Walking through the towns during the festival will make you think you have gone back in time.

While the “Tracht” (traditional garb) is prevalent throughout German-speaking countries, appearance varies widely by location, and Val Gardena’s version is unique. The garment is not usually worn on a daily basis, but is reserved for festivals and special occasions. The Folklore Festival is one of those days where the locals don it with pride, paying tribute to their roots.

Mingle with the locals

Each year, the festival is held in a different town of Val Gardena. The highlight is always the festive procession, where you can admire the local Tracht in all of its diversity and beauty. As you’ll see, great attention is given to details – the women’s headdress, for example, can tell you if she is married or available!

The Val Gardena Folklore Festival is not only about dressing up, though. Traditional food is served, folk music is played by local bands, and dancers entertain the crowds. Bottom line, the Val Gardena Folklore Festival is the event to attend if you want to immerse yourself in local culture - attend with the whole family!
