Craft Beer in Val Gardena

The world-wide craft beer movement has finally found its way into Val Gardena. The valley currently features two local microbreweries: Monpier de Gherdeina and Eguia Craft Beer Brewery.

Brewpubs

Labetula

Home of Monpier de Gherdeina in Ortisei. Monpier was Val Gardena’s first microbrewery, founded in 2016 by four local friends. You’ll find Monpier beer in some bars and supermarkets around the valley, but arguably the best place to try them is their own brewpub, Labetula (“the drinking hole”). The pub is located at the 181 Center in Ortisei, and the brewery is right next door.

Monpier’s beers are all top-fermented (no lagers), and some use added spices. Usually, half a dozen different styles are available on tap, some of them seasonal. Over seventy different craft beer bottles from all around the world complete the beer selection at Labetula.

Tip: If pub food and craft beer are your thing, Labetula is the place to go in Val Gardena. Labetula definitely features Val Gardena’s longest beer list (by far).

Hotel Interski House Bar

Home of Eguia Craft Beer Brewery in Santa Cristina. Since December 2016, beer lover Lukas Demetz has been brewing craft beer in his own hotel under the Eguia (“eagle”) brand. Production is quite small, so it’s not as easy to find these beers around Val Gardena. If you’re looking to taste them, your best bet is the Hotel Interski House Bar – right at the source of production.

Eguia beers are made in a purist style, without added spices. And yet, this microbrewery produces an impressive range of beer-styles. The water used for the brewing process comes from the local Cisles river and some of the hops are grown in the Hotel’s own garden! You can’t get more local than that.
A selection of beers is always available on tap, while others are brewed seasonally and can be found in bottle form.

Tip: Eguia beer may not be the easiest find, but is well worth the effort. Beers are available through their online shop as well!

Bar

Vinotheque La Cercia

Technically a wine bar, La Cercia (“the tasting room”) does have a few interesting craft beers on offer - strictly in bottle form. This place is perfect for drinks before or after dinner (although they do sell snacks).

Tip: If you’re in a group where some people want to drink wine and some people want to drink beer, La Cercia is the perfect choice.

Huts

Sofie Hut

While the Sofie Hut more renowned for their high quality cuisine and impressive wine cellar, they also have a few craft beers on offer. As with La Cercia, go here if you want to please both wine and beer drinkers.

Saslonch Hut

Owned and operated by one of the founders of Monpier, the Saslonch hut near Selva offers several of the microbrewery’s beers on tap, and you’ll even find some international craft beer bottles on offer.

Craft Beer Festival

Every year in July, a dozen beer producers from Val Gardena, Italy and even Belgium set up their tasting booths on the Nives meadow in Selva for the Val Gardena Craft Beer Festival. The event is accompanied by tastings and live music. Don’t miss it!
