Restaurants

Situated high in the Italian Dolomites, Val Gardena has access to lots of quality cooking ingredients – one of them is meat. Most restaurants in Val Gardena will serve meat dishes, including locally hunted game, but a few venues have invested in high quality grilling equipment, and they simply stand out. Here are the best steak houses in Val Gardena.

La Tambra

Pizzeria on the ground floor but steak house in the basement, La Tambra in S. Cristina is the perfect place to go if some people in your group want to eat pizza (or other dishes) and some want to eat meat. Besides offering cuts from the US and South America, La Tambra also ages beef in their own dry-age fridge near the entrance. From Tomahawk steaks to the most tender of fillets, meat lovers will feel right at home at La Tambra. Considering choice of cuts and quality of meat, La Tambra is Val Gardena’s best steak house at the moment.

Tubladel

Tubladel in Ortisei is the most elegant restaurant on this list. If you’re looking for a high end destination with a fine wine list, this is the place to go. Tubladel is also the best choice if you want to try game meat - the deer and venison cuts on offer are delicious. The meat is often served on a hot plate and US beef is frequently available.

Armin's Grillstube

Situated in the basement of the Hotel Armin, the Grillstube in Selva has been specialized on dishing up juicy steaks and other delights for a long time. The beef tartare is especially good: it's made at the table according to your preferences. The wine selection isn’t too bad, either!

L'Angolino

The Hotel Passo Sella features a small new restaurant specialized on meat dishes: L’Angolino. It takes a 15 minute drive from Selva to get there (double that from Ortisei), but you won’t be disappointed. The chef serves up great Tomahawks and T-Bone steaks, grilled to perfection in their Josper grill. In winter, L'Angolino is accessible from the slopes, located on the Sellaronda!

On the Slopes

Fienile Monte

Located on the Sellaronda, Fienile positions itself as “probably the most expensive hut in the Dolomites.” One thing is sure – the steaks are fantastic and the wine list is decent. Just remember to reserve a table, as Fienile is very popular and space is limited. Open only during ski season!

Tip: Fienile organises special events throughout winter. You’ll be taken to and from the hut on snowgroomers for dinner. Book ahead!

Costamula

This ancient but beautifully renovated farmhouse has a very interesting location – you can reach it both on skis and by car (or foot) from Ortisei year round. The menu mainly features local and Tyrolean dishes, but offers meat specialties as well, ranging from local game to salt-aged rib-eye steaks and T-bone steaks. Book ahead for dinner! Costamula is sometimes closed in summer.

Butchers

If you’re planning to do your own cooking while in Val Gardena and you're looking for a good source of quality meat, we’ve got you covered.

Gruber

Gruber (Ortisei) is the best butcher in the area. He sells meat of all kinds and makes his own Speck, Salami and Kaminwurzen. The Gruber family owns a farm in Villandro, not far from Val Gardena, and they love to experiment with various breeds of beef. Not everything available is on display, but don't be afraid to ask if you’re looking for something special: Mr. Gruber is always happy to serve the needs of meat lovers. The shop is hidden away in an alley to the left of Cafe Corso in Ortisei.

Tip: If you request it a week or so in advance, Gruber can hook you up with some of his own dry-aged cuts!

Pramstraller

Pramstraller (Selva) delivers meat to several local restaurants and shops, but you can also buy it directly from them at their shop, located not too far from the church in Selva. The cattle is raised in Val Gardena’s neighbouring valley, so you can’t get much more local than that! Speck and various other cold cuts are all produced on site.
