Introduction

The Sellaronda MTB counter-clockwise tour (green signposting) is ideal for mountain bikers who are in good shape and enjoy cycling uphill. Of course, you can also do the route around the Sella on an e-bike, which will save you a lot of sweat but is just as much fun as a classic mountain bike. Start in Selva in Val Gardena and experience a 57.7-kilometre tour with an ascent of 1,020 metres.

You will be rewarded for your efforts with wonderful descents on trails and gravel roads as well as fantastic mountain panoramas. Part of the route is covered with the help of the comfortable mountain railways, which allow you to take your bike with you. Including an extensive lunch break, even experienced mountain bikers should allow themselves six to nine hours to complete the tour. General information about the tour can be found on our overview page "Sellaronda MTB Tour".

You can start the tour from all four valleys on the Sellaronda: Alta Badia, Val di Fassa, Arabba and Val Gardena. We recommend Selva in Val Gardena as the starting and finishing point. The best way to get there by car is to take the Brenner motorway and follow the signs to Selva from the Val Gardena/Chiusa exit. By train, you travel to Bressanone, Bolzano or Chiusa and then take the bus. If you arrive by plane, choose between the destination airports of Bolzano, Verona, Milan, Bergamo and Innsbruck. If you don't bring your mountain bike, you can rent one for the Sellaronda MTB Tour from one of the bike rental shops in Val Gardena.

Description

Sellaronda MTB counter-clockwise tour: find all the information about the tour here.

Start: Selva

The Sellaronda MTB tour counter-clockwise is fundamentally different from the clockwise route. The route is only suitable for experienced mountain bikers and you should either be in good shape or use an e-bike if you attempt this tour. You will be rewarded with outstanding views and wonderful descents. It's also recommended that you do this tour with a professional guide at your side.

The tour starts in beautiful Selva. The Ciampinoi cable car takes you to the foot of the Sassolungo. Follow a hiking path and trail with some steep passages and curves. Arriving at the legendary Comici Hut, you descend to the valley station of the Gran Paradiso cable car. The 8-seater chairlift with extra bike transport seats takes you to the highest point of the Città dei Sassi, through which you then roll to the Passo Sella.

From the Sella Pass to the Pordoi Pass

Once you have crossed the car park, a short trail leads uphill to the ridge and continues to the right along a gravel road towards Col Rodella. Just before the Salei Hut, the "Rodeline" begins an exciting trail that joins the Joel Trail and leads to Pian Frataces (Lupo Bianco). Shortly after, you enter a road tunnel to access the "Infinity" Trail. This trail leads to Canazei. Canazei in the Val di Fassa thankfully offers you the opportunity to take a short rest. From here you take the cable car to Pecol and with another cable car, you finally reach Col dei Rossi.

Enjoy the view of the Marmolada and the Fedaia Lake, and then ride briefly uphill to the Fredarola Hut. Continue on the "Lezuo" Trail in the direction of Arabba. You won't get all the way to the village of Arabba: the trail leads you to the Fodom cable car that takes you to the Passo Pordoi. Here, after a short section on a seldom-used asphalt road, one of the most beautiful trails of the Dolomites begins: the Pordoi-Burz Trail, also called Ossario.

To Arabba and Corvara

The "Pordoi-Burz" Trail ends at the Burz Hut and here you ride along the Burz Trail, which is perfect for practising tight turns, to Arabba. Follow the green Sellaronda MTB TOUR signs and enjoy a quiet 450-metre uphill to the La Marmotta Hut. From here the trail continues flowing for a short while on the Fle Trail that runs through the forest towards Corvara. One last gravel section downhill and you arrive in Corvara in Alta Badia. Here you have to pedal a bit again because it goes from Corvara in the direction of Colfosco to the Plans-Frara circuit.

From Corvara back to Selva

From Corvara, you have to pedal a bit again as you head towards Colfosco until you reach the Plans-Frara cable car. The cable car finally takes you to the Jimmi Hut on the Passo Gardena. From the Passo Gardena, a beautiful path (also used by hikers) leads over the Plans de Frea to the Restaurant Gérard and further downhill to Plan de Gralba. From Plan de Gralba, the only descent left is on the ski slope to get back to Selva.
