Mountain in the Sassolungo Group

The Plattkofel (Italian "Sassopiatto"), is the westernmost mountain of the Sassolungo Group. The name of the mountain refers to the distinctive "plate" that points towards the Alpe di Siusi. The summit cross of the Plattkofel stands on the middle peak at an altitude of 2,958 metres above sea level. The highest point, however, at 2,964 metres, is on the south-east summit.

The Plattkofel is the only mountain in the famous Sassolungo Group that can be climbed on foot. The view you enjoy from the summit cross is indescribable: the panoramic view of Dolomite peaks such as the Marmolada and the Sella massif will immediately erase the efforts of the ascent.

Plattkofel: Hiking

The Plattkofel is the only mountain of the famous Sassolungo Group whose summit you can reach on foot. This is due to the plate that gives it its name, over which a winding hiking trail (trail no. 527) leads to the summit cross, starting at the Rifugio Sasso Piatto.

The most famous hiking trail in the region is the Friedrich August Trail, which leads around the entire Sassolungo Group. If you don't want to do the whole loop, hike directly from the Passo Sella to the Rifugio Sasso Piatto. You can reach the Rifugio Sasso Piatto from the Passo Sella or along wonderful paths from Saltria via the Tirler or Zallinger hotels. A tour of the Plattkofel is also worthwhile because of the spectacular view from the summit.
